How Do Guitar Amplifiers Work




Guitar amplifiers amplify the sound fed into it from the guitar and drive the guitar loudspeaker. The sound waves generated by the guitar strings are converted into minute electrical signal with the help of the guitar pick up and then fed into the guitar amplifier (or simply guitar amp). Depending on whether or not the input of the guitar amp can work with the minute signal coming from the guitar, the guitarist may need to feed the guitar signal first into a pre-amplifier and then take the output from the pre-amplifier to feed the guitar amp.



The working of a guitar amp typically has four stages – input, signal modulation, signal amplification and then finally the output stage.



Input Stage



The input stage of the guitar amp accepts the input signal either from the guitar pre-amp or directly from the guitar itself. Normally, there are input female jacks installed onto the amplifier where you attach the input signal cable. If the guitar signal is too weak to be fed into the guitar amp, the signal should first pass through a guitar pre-amp. It is very important that there is proper impedance matching between the available input signal impedance and specified guitar amplifier’s input signal impedance. More often than not, signal impedance mismatch is the cause of deterioration of the final guitar sound on the loudspeaker.



Nowadays, there are many guitar amps, which have a pre-amplification stage incorporated into them. For such amps, you do not need to pass the guitar signal into a separate pre-amp. You can directly feed the signal into the amp itself.



Signal Modulation Stage



Plain in and plain out is not exactly the way normal electric guitarist likes it. He wants the guitar sound to be jazzed up, twangy, funky, heavily distorted etc. etc. For such sounds, the input signal has to under go modulation before they can be amplified. Say suppose the guitarist wants a heavy distortion akin to heavy metal rock sound. To get this type of sound, the input signal is fed into the signal modulation stage where the signal undergoes the required (but controlled) distortion. The same applies to other sound effects like wah-wah sound, reverb etc. Many guitar amps have equalizers and other tone control knobs, which also come under the signal modulation stage.



Signal Amplification Stage



The signal amplification stage is the ‘business’ stage of any guitar amp. It is here where the guitar sound is actually amplified. Good guitar amps will faithfully magnify the signal coming from the Signal Modulation Stage, i.e. the incoming signal will be the exact replica of this stage’s outgoing signal, only that it will be of much greater amplitude. It is the ‘business’ of any amplifier (be it voice or guitar amp) to faithfully amplify the incoming signal.



Output Stage



This is the final stage of all guitar amps. Some guitar amps have the output driver stage as a part of the output stage, while some of them do not. In some cheap guitar amps, the outgoing signal from the signal amplification stage is directly fed into the loudspeaker. However, good guitar amps have proper signal conditioning output stage where it is ensured that output signal is properly matched to the input specifications of the loudspeaker.

• Closed loop – The typical system uses two loops on the ground side and one loop located in the appliance cabinet which exchanges temperatures with the loop which is pulling the temperatures from the ground. Closed loop systems have much longer and larger pipes implemented into the ground for better accuracy and also have an extra loop located in between the refrigerant loop and the water loop, pumping in both loops. Closed loops come in two different types themselves one being the vertical closed loop and the other is the horizontal closed loop. The difference between the two being the vertical closed pump has pipes which run vertical through the ground while the horizontal closed loops have pipes running horizontally through the ground.

• Pond – Pond based heat pumps are not commonly used due to the need to be close to an external source of water. Pond based heat pumps are more preferred and recommended for people who want to use a pump but have bad quality water, or a low heat source currently containable by a standard heat pump. The Pond based heat pump gets its name from the fact that the loop dragging in the heat is located underneath a large body of water, for example a pond.

• Open Loop – An open loop is a heat pump which draws in water from an external source stores it in the main refrigerant where heat is extracted from the water source and the water is then returned to the external source.

• Standing column well – A standing column well heat pump is much like an open loop heat pump except it is designed to pull in water from deep within a well and exchange it for heat in the main refrigerant where it is then returned back into the well while traveling down it exchanges heat with the bedrock.

How does a geothermal heat pump work in large buildings?
A geothermal heat pump works in all different ways each make varying depending on its best function for what it is replacing. For example a heat pump moves anywhere in between three and five times faster than the heat or electricity in which it consumes it is actually outputting more energy than it is inputting this causes the efficiency of thermals to exceed anywhere between 100 and 200 percent. How I Started Writing My First Book and Why I Decided To Write It




I am often asked why I started writing my first series of books, and although the answer is actually fairly simple, it spans a period of about 12 years.



Ever since I started my martial arts training back in the early 80’s, I bought any and every book that I could get my hands on concerning every martial art that I could find. Even if it had nothing to do with the ones I had actually started studying. I had books of all kinds from Aikido to Zen and everything in between. Some of those books I still have to this day.



Several of the books that I bought were ones devoted to the art of kicking. Now it didn’t matter to me how good these books were, because at the time I had no idea if they were good or not. I just bought them because they were on the martial arts and because someone had written them. So they had to be good, didn’t they? Which brings up a topic for another article, can you learn from a book? Well, if it is accurate and written well, then yes you can. If it is inaccurate and written poorly then your ability to learn from it is sorely limited.



A quote that I have at the beginning of all of my books on kicking is from the late Bruce Lee, and it goes something like this.



“When I first started training in the martial arts, a kick was just a kick and a punch was just a punch. As I started to learn the martial arts, I realized that a kick was no longer just a kick, and a punch was no longer just a punch. After I had learned the martial arts, I realized that a kick was just a kick and a punch was just a punch.”



As I progressed in my own training, I began to realize that all of the books, and I mean ALL of the books that I owned on kicking, were lacking in two major areas. First was the lack of detail in explaining all of the finer points of each kick, and the second was the attempt at putting too many different kicks in one book and spending too little time on each one. This seemed to be a common occurrence in a lot of books devoted to the martial arts, and not just the ones devoted to kicking.



Eventually, after going through my collection of about 2,000 martial arts books, I whittled it down to about 200 that I felt were truly worth owning. Although I had gotten rid of a lot of these books, there were still a lot of books that were very good, but were on martial arts that I had little or no knowledge of.



Several years later, I actually sat down and decided to start writing a series of books on kicking after engaging in a discussion with my instructor concerning an article that I had read in one of the many martial arts magazines back in the early 90’s entitled, “The No Look Back Kick.” The basic premise of the article was the authors attempt to teach you that you could execute a back kick effectively without looking at where you were kicking. I remember wondering at the time if the author had ever heard the expression, “Look before you leap.”



I remember telling my instructor that I was more than just a little bit annoyed at the context of this article. I even remember lecturing my students about the absurdity of such a thing and admonished them to never even attempt such a foolish stunt. As a matter of fact, I would compare the act of kicking while intentionally not looking about as intelligent as letting Stevie Wonder behind the wheel of a fully functional and moving automobile.



My instructor listed patiently to my tirade and when I had finished, he gave me this advise, “If you don’t do something about it, you’ve got no right to complain.” Wow! Talk about words of wisdom. And this time I listened.



I began writing the rough draft of my first manuscript on an old non-electric typewriter and erasable typing paper. Talk about a chore compared to today’s modern computers and writing and photography programs such as Adobe PageMaker® and Adobe Photoshop®. I had been doing this for a couple of years when an associate of mine at the time convinced me to buy a computer and do my book writing on that instead of the typewriter. At first I was skeptical until I actually typed one page and then hit spell-check. After that I was hooked and as they say, the rest is history.



After I had finished the first draft of my first manuscript, which was to be, and is, entitled, “Achieving Kicking Excellence; Vol. #1: Back Kick, I contacted four different publishers who primarily published books pertaining to the martial arts. Now I will not mention who those publishers were, but I will tell you their responses. One publishing company agreed to publish my books, but wanted me to combine them into two large hard back volumes, rather than the current ten volumes. Another publisher liked my book ideas, but didn’t want to publish them because I didn’t have enough students to justify publishing them. Because in her words, “Who is going to buy your books except for your students.” My response to this was that my books were universal in nature and were of great value to anyone who wanted to learn how to kick properly. The other two publishers never even bothered to return my correspondence.



So to summarize, here are the reasons why I decided to write this series of books.



1. To provide the reader with quality information on the subject of kicking. 2. To reach a larger audience with the aforementioned information. 3. To create a higher standard of writing in the martial arts field.



As you read this article, my first two books have already been published and are in print, and have received outstanding reviews from various professionals throughout the martial arts community. The remaining eight books in the first series are written and will be returned from the printer in early 2007. One final thought I would like to leave with you, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” I did!

Many of us could save 20-30% on our energy bills through improvements such as the purchasing of more energy efficient appliances, sealing air and duct leaks, and adding loft and cavity wall insulation.



           



Preparing your heating for the winter



Winter is the season when we consume the greatest amount of energy, mainly for the purposes of keeping warm. Having your central heating system serviced before winter will help. You can also vacuum out the vents and other heating apparatus. And consider having a setback thermostat fitted. It regulates the temperature, allowing the home to be less warm when you are away or asleep. 



 



Seal gaps around doors and windows.



Put in weather stripping around doors and windows and caulk gaps where necessary. A large amount of heat is wasted through doors and windows not being sealed correctly.



 



Seal any other leaks



Use caulking and weather stripping around entry points for all pipes and ducts that travel through an external wall.



 



Check the fireplace.



Take time to check the chimney to make sure it is clear of leaves and nests built by birds or squirrels.



 



Inspect your insulation



Check out your roof. One of the most efficient ways to save on heating is to have sufficient loft insulation. If you don't know how to tell, look for your ceiling joists. If you can see them, you need more lagging.



 



 



Keep your hot water hot



It costs about 14% of your overall bill to heat your water. Wrapping an insulation blanket around your water heater, insulating your water pipes and considering the installation of a timer on all electric water heaters can save you money. And you could turn the direction of heating vents from up to down because hot air always rises.
